Depends on what you mean by "grammar". I think there are two kinds:
"natural" grammar, which covers your acquired ability to use the
language "correctly" (or at least appropriately), and "formal" grammar,
which covers your ability to parse a sentence and identify syntactical
features. Natural grammar is essential to effective communication in
speech or writing; without it, you won't make sense. Formal grammar is
not a tool for communication; it's a tool for analysis. It can help
effective communication, because, when you look at a sentence and think
"it doesn't work", formal grammatical analysis can help you work out
what the problem is and how to fix it.
