OBdisclaimer about receiving List in Digest form

One place to start would be

Brian's (brian -at- bloomington -dot- in -dot- us) list of many of the most common
image file formats. "Since there are literally hundreds of various
image file formats out there, this file doesn't pretend to list ALL of
them," sez he. This page also contains information about what
conversion filters support each format. He lists image, 3-D, and movie
formats.
Point your browser to
http://www.octobernet.com/~brian/graphics/image.formats.html

Another page containing 2D Bitmap Specifications, 3D Geometry &
Animation Specifications, and Utils, Info, Source, FAQs and URLs is at
http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/~mxr/gfx

Max gives a list in download form (MSWord)of file formats:
http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/~mxr/gfx/filelist/filefmts.doc

A subsidiary of the latter page (
http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/~mxr/gfx/utils-hi.html
) contains utilities for different formats.

As for when and why to use them, I hope someone else will pipe up just
about now. Perhaps Arlen?

Doug
