We've used the comment and revision tracking features very successfully
since we moved to Word 97 last year. Some folks had to get used to using
the comments feature, rather than just typing things like questions and
requests into the document, but I've sent out a few informational notes to
the SMEs, and it's gotten better. Until this summer, we've produced only
online Help, and comments helped me sleep easier at night, knowing my SMEs
questions to me couldn't be accidentally compiled into the Help. The
revision tracking didn't require any learning curve from the SMEs, except
to learn how to switch the view so they could see what the document would
look like if revisions were all accepted, or all rejected. We keep a
password on all of the documents, so SMEs can't make changes that the tech
writers never know about.

I'm curious about the Word 97 functions for tracking docs: having
reviewers insert comments, using revision marks, etc. Has anyone been using
these features successfully for doc reviews?
All best,
