Another argument in support of a good change control procedure is from the
company standards perspective. We have templates for internal documents as
well as documents that will go to customers. One of the key items on our
internal document templates has been the creation date. Canada allows a
Research and Development tax credit (which can be considerable, as you can
imagine) for companies engaged in research, providing that they can
substantiate their research efforts. Evidence of research in the software
industry is often found only in supporting documentation.

By making sure that a) we have a standard, and that b) everyone follows it,
and c) nobody makes changes without a review/approval process, we can
protect the integrity of our documentation.
