Having read many a scientific journal article, I can confidently say
that, in writing at least, most scientists do not "prefer the elegant
solution". I would not generally have use the word "elegance" myself to
describe clarity and articulateness in writing, for much the same
reasons Michael Wing cited. (Elegance usually has connotations of
luxury and taste.) But I think I can see what Tim is driving at -
technical subjects seem to generate clumsy writing. If we let this
happen in our own work, we are not doing our job of communicating needed
information.
