        The College of Arts and Letters at James Madison University seeks applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Institute of Technical and Scientific Communication.  The position is offered as a tenured 10 or 12 month appointment, at the rank of associate professor or professor.  Rank, salary and other conditions of employment are negotiable.  The Director serves a renewable five-year term of office to begin no later than August 1, 1998. A PH.D. in an area closely related to the program's curriculum is required, along with an outstanding record of professional achievement, significant teaching experience at the college level, successful, relevant administrative experience, and the capacity to help integrate and expand the program.
        The program director works with the dean and the faculty of the college to promote the goals of the program, college, and the university. Duties include, but are not limited to teaching in the program; administration of faculty, staff, and student affairs; budget and resource management; curriculum development; recruitment; and community and industry outreach. The director reports and makes recommendations to the dean in personnel hiring, tenure, merit pay and promotion decisions, and is expected to demonstrate a commitment to university initiatives in general education, assessment, multiculturalism, and interdisciplinary studies.  Excellent communication, technology and interpersonal skills are required.
        James Madison University is a comprehensive coeducational state institution located in the scenic Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.  The university employs nearly 600 full-time faculty and serves approximately 14,000 students.  The 465 acre campus is positioned near the center of Harrisonburg, a progressive and growing city of over 30,000.  The area enjoys a rich history, moderate climate, and diverse economy.  Residents benefit from easy access to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, MD, and Richmond, VA.
        The Technical and Scientific Communication Program currently offers the B.A./B.S. and M.A./M.S. in Technical and Scientific Communication.  Program faculty and students also work closely with peers from other disciplines, including those associated with the sciences, languages, fine and performing arts, and traditional humanities.
