I can't help, but your problems are identical to the ones I had recently
on a project. Fortunately, I was only designing, not writing, but, in
the end, we had to tell the client that we couldn't deliver in Word 97
format. We slopped everything over to FrzmeMaker, and repaired the damage
there.

If you do find any way around your problems, I would be delighted to
hear them.
