I wasn't suggesting that you treat all audiences as idiots. However, it
is, unfortunately, not always possible to do audience analysis - well not
reliably anyway. Currently the lit I produce is for kit which is sold to
distributors which sell it on - we often have no idea who the end user is.
In such a case we get as much info as possible on audience and go for the
lowest common denominator. We also use things like Quick Ref Guides etc to
try and get across the basic info and hope it will be read.

PS Some of our customers have told us that their installation engineers are
not the brightest people around! Not their fault - some, totally PC
illiterate, have been sent to install PC based access control systems! What
can we do - even if they read the basic lit the chances are they won't
understand it. Tech Support have had calls on how to use a mouse!.
