Let's cite a source or two:
PKWare's PKZIP 2.0 for DOS manual (1992) doesn't seem to use the term alone.
They reference "PKZIP" or ".ZIP" files instead.
Ascent Solutions' WINZIP 6.2 manual (1996) uses the term Zip many times,
and capitalizes it, as in "a self-extracting Zip file..." (p. 10).
Going by the dates, it looks like the term may have become a proper noun
over time, which seems reasonable.
