I have used this exact technique when I started out writing. I've also used it
when I was a programmer. If you wait two-three weeks after the ad appears,
sometimes companies are ready to look at late resumes with a new eye towards
finding someone. I'd suggest trying it with technical writing ads too.

Another thing I do is go through ads where computers are used, or where the
company is a software vendor and send them ads as well.

Good luck.
