John,

Word does not clean up its temporary files when it crashes. They can
usually be used to recover the last state of the document.

Ideally Word, when restarted asks if you want to load the temporary of
the crashed document, which then cleans things up, but that works
rarely.

You have to manually delete the files most of the time. I regularly
clean out my Temp directory of old dated files to recover disk space.
