Yep, Microsoft has a patch.

Word 8 saves all documents in RTF (Rich Text Format). It was believed by
MS that their would not be a backwards compatibility problem, but their
is.

The patch can be down loaded from the Microsoft site (microsoft.com) for
free; that is the cost is nothing, the patch is almost 8Meg. It takes a
long time to down load.
