All a virus checker does is to look for certain sequences of bytes in
files. Word macros are byte sequences just like executable code. Virus
checkers most definitely can find macro viruses.

There's a pretty good discussion of this in the new book "Word 97
Annoyances," by Leonhard, et al., which I recommend for this and other
subjects.
