TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
My horologist husband (does that adjective offend anyone?) reminded
me that there have been master and slave clocks for 100 years or more.
I remember seeing slave clocks in USA schools - they're the clocks
in the classroom whose minute hands would jump more than a minute at
a time, because the master clock in the basement was regulating the
setting. This made it difficult to stall effectively when called on
just before the end of the class...
But now that my consciousness has been raised, I'm going to call the
Board of Education and demand that these offensive clocks be removed
from areas where sensitive children could be influenced. (Actually,
I think cheap, battery-operated clocks have largely replaced these
higher-quality timepieces, alas.)

P.S. Seriously, I agree about avoiding "expensive" words when
possible and using standard terminology when available.
My goal is to avoid distracting or confusing the reader.
Sometimes I have to choose one over the other.
