[replying to a small chunk of the contracting thread]

=original question:=
<How do contractors manage health insurance?>
=Jim Chevalier replied:=
Don't have it myself, having great health and no kids [hmmm.. cause and
effect?] But from what I know of the rates, you'd still come out ahead.

Oh, it worries me when [USA-dwelling] people don't have health
insurance... I let my policy lapse after leaving a captive job for a contract
job, and wound up in the hospital three months later. Emergency
gallbladder surgery. (I was only 25 and a marathon runner at the time, so
I thought that *nothing* could ever happen, health-wise) Set me back
HUGE LY, and I'm still recovering from those bills. Ech.

So now I wander among my contracting pals, suggesting that, if you don't
want to pay for a major-medical policy, at LEAST get yourself a
catastrophic illness policy. It's cheap and can save you years of debt... And
Jim's right -- even when I started paying $170/month for insurance, my
hourly rate was high enough to cover this added expense. Just a thought
for you. :-)

Have a great weekend, all.
