Am I nuts in thinking this way?
** The company is entitled to the file if the contract so
specifies. If it doesn't, they're not.
It's not that the company would be unethical in dumping
you, or that you would be unethical in clinging to the
file. It's just that since the file does give the
company the ability to easily continue what you started
without needing to re-employ you, the file has value for
the company, and the contract (or any subsequent dealings)
should take that value into account.
