The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Develop technical documentation for the BEA TAP (TUXEDO API Personality for
IBM CICs) product suite. Tasks include working directly with TAP Engineers
to obtain product information, creating plans for development of new
documentation and writing documentation for new features and platforms as
well as enhancing existing documentation.
Additional duties include development of graphics and other artwork,
performing final review and editing of documentation before submission to
manufacturing, working with testers, applications developers, and customers
to understand areas for documentation improvement, and development of
auxiliary documents, such as web pages, sales training information, product
descriptions, etc. as needed. Further specific responsibilities:
1. Working closely with BEA Product Marketing and Development teams to
gather product information necessary for the creation of customer
documentation supporting BEA middleware products.
2. Design, research, write, publish technical manuals, user guides, and
other customer documents.
3. Convert FrameMaker versions of documents to HTML online browsable documents.
4. Maintain version control of all documents.
5. Contribute to the creation of and compliance with BEA Information
Engineering standards.
6. Oversee distribution of documents created remotely and reviewed locally.
7. Create and maintain documentation publication schedules.
8. Ensure local technical support of publication services: Purchasing,
installing, and implementing publication software packages from vendors
9. Maintaining publication readiness of FrameMaker+SGML (templates, fonts,
etc.)
10. Comply with local BEA Marketing requirements for product publications
Qualifications/Necessary Skills
4-7 years experience in developing technical documentation for software
products. Knowledge and experience with FrameMaker+SGML, proven ability to
develop context-sensitive hypertext systems, ability to develop required
artwork and knowledge of HTML/Web-based publishing is required. Previous
experience with software products in the networking, middleware, OLTP or
development environment and tools areas is a plus. Exposure to IBM CICS
Command Language. Knowledge of software development languages such as C, C++
and JAVA is very beneficial. Ability to work well with engineers and other
technical people and to work independently and with self-direction is very
important.
Educational Requirements
B.A. in English, with a concentration in Technical Communication or B.S. in
an engineering or technical discipline with a concentration in technical
writing, is required. Demonstration of professional experience and
accomplishments equivalent to a formal educational background can substitute.
