An interesting question...

It's not listed in my copy of The American Heritage Dictionary of the
English Language. Perhaps other dictionaries have a different variation
on this word?

Never thought of this particular issue even when I recently applied for a
bar coding project in Boston. The job was offered to me, btw, but I
didn't accept it. One would feel a sense of satisfaction when a large
bar coding project is finished, as this would have been, but bar coding
is boring in midstream, which ever way the word is spelled! <g>
