Subject:emphasis- italics vs bold From:Rebecca Carr <rebecca -at- WHITE -dot- SC -dot- TI -dot- COM> Date:Wed, 3 Sep 1997 11:16:37 -0500
In my company, italics is preferable to bold. We discourage bolding anywhere
and reserve it for headings in tables, level headings in chapters, and
some graphic use. We also use italics VERY sparingly.
I don't have anything to quote you, but our feeling is that
bolding reduces readability and looks rather unsightly unless you are
using it to mark "keywords" throughout a text. In this case, you would
have a glossary of key terms in an appendix to define each of them. This
is acceptable (at least for us). So, IMHO, don't change the template.
Emphasis is often overdone; better to have none than too much.

Becky
