At a previous job, I was often asked to help with training materials.
I liked the break from my regular writing, and writing in a different
voice often helped me focus when I returned to writing user docs.
The hardest part of writing/editing training material was that I had
never given any trainings. The training manager asked if I would like
to help with the trainings or even give them myself. If not for a huge
case of stage fright I probably would have taken her up on her offer.
I did sit in on several of her trainings for software I was currently
writing for. Often I would come back and rewrite much of what I had
written because I had learned alot about who was using the program and
how they were using it.
Maybe if you ask to be involved in training on a trial basis; you'll
be able to report exactly how beneficial it was to you. And maybe your
boss needs to see you in action before it can become a permanent
thing.
