I once had the opportunity to contribute to a human-factors seminar taught by
someone far more qualified than I was. During my small portion of the
seminar, one of the things I mentioned was the magic number 7 as it applied
to number of menu items in a GUI. To illustrate, I said that television
producers used the same principle. That's why, I said, there were seven
castaways on Gilligan's Island, and why Denise Crosby left "Star Trek: The
Next Generation"--she was the eighth cast member, and she wasn't getting
enough screen time!

You should have seen the look on the instructor's face... 8^)
