I have exercised that advice at every interview I've attended and it has
hurt me every time. I have a strong personality and an unconventional look
and style, and to date these have alienated most potential employers, even
when I behave as politely and professionally as I know how. I have never
lost or failed to gain work because of my skills; it has always been
because of my looks and/or personality.

The problem is, I don't know what to be, how to look, or how to act instead!

This is what pushed me into self-employment, at which I've been more
successful.
