This was the advice I received when I was starting out. And I still
think that it would have been an excellent way to learn my way around.

Unfortunately, the reality was that nobody would hire without
experience. I had to get a start by scrambling for small contracts and
working my way up.

The trouble was, I developed a liking for contracting, and, just about
the time that companies were interested in hiring me full-time, I wasn't
interested! Bravo for life's little ironies, as Gary Trudeau once said.
