"Computers and networks are, as Dale Spender (1995) notes, an
environment of privilege-created by privileged white men and used
mostly by them-and those environments are quite often forbidding to
women and people from disadvantaged groups."
---------------------------------
I agree with most respondents that the author is not just way out in
left field, he's not even in the same ballpark as the rest of us. But
he has at least one companion -- the author of the EP article. It's
been a few years since I subscribed to that magazine, but I'm
incredulous that they would think it'll be another 4 years before even
30% of publishing is done electronically. But it's an interesting topic
of discussion while we sit around sipping Sarsaparillas and listening to
the Victrola.

What also surprises me, though, is that several respondents have agreed
with the above quote. You really think that computers and networks are
forbidding to women? Would you please explain to me why you think women
feel this way? Now as for "disadvantaged groups" -- what does the
author mean? I would think that if you were without an arm, or even
just left-handed, you'd be in a disadvantaged group. But I get the
feeling from the context that he's talking about non-white people.
Again, why would computers and networks be forbidding to non-white
people? Does the author think they're all stupid, or what? I guess I
just don't get it.

The subject line also provokes another response in me. "What do you
think?" I think posters should stop using such non-specific subject
lines!!! This list has a lot of traffic, and I don't think everyone
reads every post. I certainly don't. I have to download my mail, and I
pick and choose what to download because I don't have the time to get
everything. I download a message if it's on a subject of interest to
me. When I see a message with a subject line that doesn't tell what the
subject is, I usually don't download it. I'm glad I downloaded this
one, but I bet a lot of list members missed it.
