Chris, the fact that you stumble over the pronunciation is
a good clue that neither alternative is best: there'll
always be some portion of your audience that won't like
whichever solution you choose. Since there's good logic
behind both choices, neither is inherently superior from a
grammatical standpoint. How about "_the_ .eel extension" as
an alternative?
