Try this experiment: Write a page both ways. Hold them each at arms
length
at take a look at them. Which looks more comfortable to read? Take a
look
at any recent bestseller. I guarantee you that they are not still
using
manual printing presses, but book publishers still generally (with
exceptions) use two spaces.

Depends on the type face in use. It's a different effect with monospaced
type
than with proportional. (the printing guys here argued for double column,
serif type
as easiest to read/most words per page layout..so of course the industry
spec is
single column with sans serif font...8) )

Book publishers probably use an "Em Space" for sentence breaks. Looking
here on my copy
of MS word, i find there's several options for spacing (and same is true of
word perfect
and probably lotus word pro and so on.)
