In a training document, if I refer to the various menu selections under
"File" (such as New, Open, Close, Save) as "subordinate" items, what
would
be an appropriate term for "File"? I don't particularly like the
suggested
anonymous for subordinate, i.e., superior, dominant, primary, leading.
Any
other ideas someone might have would be appreciated.

Perhaps I'm misunderstanding the question, but here's my answer to the
question as I understand it.

I would refer to New, Open, etc., as options on the File menu.

I would refer to File and its peers (View, Window, or whatever) as
options on the main menu (assuming, of course, that is indeed the main
menu)..

I don't know why you would refer to certain options as subordinate.
