This is a good place to point out that TECHWR-L and STC don't
represent exactly the same constituencies. While I can't disagree
with Eric's statement about technical *writers*, STC represents the
larger community of technical *communicators*. More than one visual
designer has said to me, "Leave me out of this certification debate.
I'm as much a technical communicator as anyone, but I'm not a
writer!"

If we find any core skills for technical communicators, they'll
turn out to be things like the ability to learn quickly and the
ability to organize information. Things that are hard -- but
maybe not impossible -- to measure.
