Frame 4 vs. Frame 5

John,

I moved my staff from Frame 4 to Frame 5 about six months ago. The original
version shipped when I made the purchase was a bit buggy - however Adobe is
pretty good about bugs... they posted a bug-fix upgrade (v5.1.1) pretty
soon after my purchase - it was a simple (long!) download. (btw, I run
Frame under both Win 3.11 and NT 4.0; my staff runs under Win 3.11.)

Two reasons why I moved up - one was because I added a new writer, and Frame
4 was no longer available... and the other is that Frame 5 offers a more
seamless interface to Adobe Acrobat (hot links, cross-references, etc.). As
pretty much everything we publish winds up as a .pdf on our Web site, I
found the new functionality to be very useful.

Day-to-day operation is about the same as Frame 4. Files are
upward-compatible, but NOT downward compatible unless you save as MIF first.
So, figure you'll need to buy v5 upgrades for tout le mond.

Just as an aside - I am the WORST upgradophobe in the computerized universe
- I know a lot (too much!) about computers, and I know a lot (way too much!)
about engineers. I am a firm believer in the adage that, "you can never
change Just One Thing." My experience with upgrades of any kind is that
something that USED to work doesn't work any more.

However, I was quite satisfied with the Frame 5 upgrade. YMMV.

Au revoir,

Jim.
