And on a much more cynical note, many interviews stretch out these days
because it's so hard to fire anybody anymore -- even with just cause --
that employers must take every precaution to be sure they aren't hiring
a loser. Been there, done that...

Buck Buchanan's situation is of course different: employers who hire
contractors have little need/incentive to interview any longer than it
takes to be reasonably sure the person will work out, because there's
less risk. (Right Buck? Although I'm sure your considerable depth of
experience serves you in good stead too where employers are concerned!)
