"a history" and "an historical [event, e.g.]" per an interesting
("an hinteresting"?) article on the back page of the Atlantic a couple of
months back--the difference being the stress on the first or second
syllable. The Atlantic article pointed out that "an history" is used, but
only by the most pretentious among us...
