TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Emily Leavitt asked about Adobe PageMill. Emily, the
original version of the software got favorable reviews in
the trade press, despite significant limitations; the
updated version was heavily panned (see the latest issue of
_Publish_ for details). The consensus seems to be that the
software is a decent, but simplistic, way to visually
create Web pages (i.e., without having to hand-code HTML),
but that far better tools exist for sophisticated users.
One problem that disqualifies the software as a useful tool
(in my opinion, based solely on the reviews I've read
rather than on personal experience) is that it converts
HTML tags it doesn't recognize and uses a few nonstandard
tags that common browsers such as Netscape don't recognize.
If the review is correct, that's inexcusable behavior.
