Hey, gang -- I think I've got a solution. It's actually a combination of a lot
of the ideas we've been kicking around:

If at all possible, restructure the sentence as needed so that we can use
the singular (since we all agree on the singular). Then, to account for
trackballs and other devices, say:

"...mouse or other pointing device..."

Does that work?
