Hoping to shed some light on this discussion and its accompanying wonderful
example, I consulted Robert Morsberger's _Commonsense Grammar and Style_.
Alas, it is not the source Barb was looking for, but I did turn up this
quotation from Gertrude Stein, which serves as the epigraph to Morsberger's
chapter on adjectives and adverbs: "Adjectives are not really and truly
interesting."
