Color seps from Word

 Russell Kilday-Hick asked for advice in printing color
 separations from MSWord. Russell, the long answer is that
 Word really isn't suitable for doing color work unless your
 output is to a desktop inkjet printer. Get something like
 PageMaker, Quark or Frame that was built to handle color
 professionally, and use that in the future.

 All's not lost, however. The short answer? Get a copy of
 Acrobat and print the Word file to a PDF file. Most
 printers big enough to own a web press are big enough to
 have someone on staff (or a subcontractor) who can color
 separate PDF files properly. There was an article on this
 in _Publish_ several months back... printing color seps
 from PDF files is becoming a new standard for color
 publishing.

 Tech note: the Adobe rep I spoke to a few nights back
 hinted that Adobe is supporting a PDF-based approach for
 color print publishing _very_ strongly. Their new "Supra"
 printing architecture is actually based around a hybrid
 PDF/postscript approach, and it's not a stretch to say that
 pure Postscript may be surpassed by PDF as the standard for
 print publishing in a few years. If it works as advertised,
 it makes Xerox's DocuTech systems look about as advanced as
 Gutenberg's original press. Call Adobe and ask for their
 white paper on Supra if you're interested in more
 details... it's a fascinating and exciting time for those
 of us who do print publishing for a living.
