I was able to attend a seminar by JoAnn Hackos this weekend that
specifically dealt with project estimation, scheduling, and tracking.
We brought an installation manual that is, in its raw condition, 150
graphics and 637 pages of text. The project manager responsible for
producing this thing gave us a deadline of 10 days. The project missed
its deadline, the book looks crummy and it's totally useless. When we
calculated the project using JoAnn's project estimation and planning
methods, the time required to produce the manual should have been 3581
hours when all of the factors are considered. It doesn't help with past
projects, but it does provide a valuable tool for convincing management
that there is a better way.
The only way to produce good, usable information is through planning.
If you can take this seminar from JoAnn Hackos, do. It was excellent.

This might be a good time for us to exchange strategies for coping with
requests for (more) overtime, dealing with bogus schedules, overwork,
etc.
