It may seem that way given the explosion of the WWW, but actually groups
like this have been around for at least 15 years, according to the Internet
Timeline at http://info.isoc.org/guest/zakon/Internet/History/HIT.html.
They pinpoint the first Usenet groups in 1979 and listservs in 1981.

However, the boom of the net has certainly changed my pattern of use.
I have been reading netnews since 1983, but over the last year or so
have switched predominantly to listservs to reduce the "noise" level.
