Why not reply to that person in private and ask him/her to correct himself in
public, for the benefit of all readers, in a way that helps save face?

Ponder this - One of the very basic parenting tricks is not to correct your
children in public. Once in a while I slip and do correct my children in
public - the result? They feel humiliated, embarrased and resentful. If I
correct them in private and ask them to behave in a certain way in public, they
feel respected and they do behave better in public. Must be human nature, eh?

Remember this: Do unto others 20% better than you would have them do unto you,
to correct for subjective error.

"I just read a reply to a message that politely, but publicly, pointed
out that
the original sender had made a mistake in terminology. <snip> However,
I
remember from my years as a teacher that you should praise in public and
punish
in private.

** Not sure which message you're referring to, but if someone
posts incorrect information, we should think not only of
that person's feelings but also of the list-readers who,
if the item goes uncorrected, could remain misinformed.
