They are like a private Internet for your organization. A good Intranet
will include company-wide mail and news servers, not just a Web server.
An FTP or other servers may also be included.

I haven't used them, so I can't compare. One of the big advantages of an
Intranet is that they are set up in exactly the same way as computers for
the Internet. Thus, there is zero learning curve and the problems and
advantages are well-understood.
