If the formatting is consistent, you can easily do it fairly automatically
- just search for the character formatting, and do a global replace with a
style, which you can format as you like.

If the formatting is not consistent, there is no satisfactory way to do it
automatically in any program, but you could return the whole document and
let a formatting wizard loose on it. This is a last ditch solution, but
may be worth a try.
