I found that some customers didn't know the difference between getting
the softcopy sources and getting on-line books. Customers might even be
disappointed to get the source documents and then find that they don't
have keyword searches or an easy-to-use index. Relative to customers,
sales reps were frequently even more ignorant of the differences between
on-line help, on-line books and softcopies. Try to find out if the
customer wouldn't just be happier with an Acrobat file.
The most common problem with providing source files is the classic Word
Template fiasco. If you are using a customized template (which you
should be) and the customer doesn't have the template or know what to do
with a template (99% of cases), he/she opens up the document and the
layout looks just horrible. If you aren't working in Word, how are you
planning on giving the client softcopies? RTF? Same problem. Text? Even
worse. Is the client going to buy your DTP tool or a viewer just to read
your source files? Chances are he will never open them.
