I believe the terms are "moderated" and "unmoderated".

Incorrect. A "moderated" list has all posts sent to the moderator, who must
read and approve of all posts *before* they are sent out to the list
membership. Techwr-l is unmoderated, and will remain so for several
reasons, only one of which is that *no one* wants the job of moderator.

And I've yet to see a single occurance of *anyone* censoring a message on
this list. (Though there have been thousands of examples where a message,
after posting, has been objected to. These objections do not equate to
censorship.)

The original distinction (tight and loose) applied to the listmembers'
perception of unmoderated lists. If you think techwr-l is moderated, I
suggest you go join a moderated list for a while (I'd suggest a few, but I
don't know your interests; there's no shortage of examples out there) and
learn the difference.
