Subject:Federal Court Rules for Contractor Benefits From:Bob Morrisette <robert -dot- morrisette -at- EBAY -dot- SUN -dot- COM> Date:Thu, 10 Oct 1996 12:53:53 -0700
Microsoft independent contractors working after
1987 should have received 401(K) and stock-purchase
plans, a federal appeals court ruled. This ruling is binding
in California. This could cost MS millions and will
support many lawyers if this ruling will extend to the many
other companies hiring contractors. The ruling includes
contractors who signed agreements not to receive benefits.
Contractors hired through temporary agencies are not included.
I imagine there are some nervous employers until this all gets
sorted out.
