Just to be a purist, Kris.... ;)

An Intranet may be connected to the Internet though a firewall.
The term merely refers to an internally self-sustaining group of
computers, whether or not that net is connected to the Internet.

The public CIA Intranet was defaced recently. The private CIA
Intranet is off-line altogether.
