I agree with Kate's comments and suggestions, but I'd like to add one more.
If I am allowed to mark directly on the text, I often use a highlighter (or
a couple of highlighters) to mark text I have concerns or questions about.
For example, I might use a green highlighter to mark text I would like to
see recast and a blue one to mark text that is substantively confusing. That
way, I am not crossing out their text, just calling attention to the
passages at issue. It is also not as visually confusing as circling can be
(as one earlier contributor suggested).
