Dear TECHWR folks,
I'm facing a dilemma and would appreciate some input. Please respond to me
individually (address below), since I sometimes get backlogged with all these
digests and might miss your reply. Of course, if you have something of
general interest, post it to the list too.
I moved to a small town in the Midwest (USA) three years ago because of a
very attractive job offer from a major corporation. I was living in
Westchester County New York before my relocation, and it broke my heart to
have to leave. I had been "downsized" out of my job, and chances of finding
something in my field before my savings ran out looked rather slim. Moving to
the Midwest seemed like the smart, if not pleasant, thing to do.
Unfortunately, the new job was rather short-lived (downsizing again).
I now find myself in an isolated location with no other potential full-time
employers. I am starting a free-lance practice, but local clients are few and
far between. My best clients are in the BosNYPhillyWash metro area. I
*really* want to move back to the NYC area, both for professional and
personal reasons.
Here's my dilemma: do I wait until I can sustain myself with business from my
East Coast clientele before moving back to NY, or do I take the plunge and
move immediately so I can be closer to prospective clients? The cost of
living there is significantly greater than here, so if things don't work out,
my savings will evaporate in short order. (As opposed to the slow leak I am
experiencing here.) I live by myself, so there are no spouse/kid issues here.
Have any of you been in this situation? Any constructive suggestions would
be appreciated.
