I'm charged with finding a quick and efficient method of converting
new and legacy PageMaker files to HTML so that they can be posted on
the Web. I work for a consulting firm, and the documents are 4 to 64
pages long with fairly similar designs for each of four series of
reports. From reading this list, I've gotten the impression that
FrameMaker would do a better job, but there is a lot of resistance to
switching, and PageMaker really is perfect for getting our reports out
to the offset printer. Our graphics files are in Freehand, with eps
with tiff preview versions in the Pagemaker files.
I've been playing with HTML Transit, which is a nice product, but
PageMaker and Freehand don't seem to be compatible with much of
anything. So far we've been exporting to ASCII and hardcoding; HTML
Transit plus rtf files is an improvement over that, but we still have
the Freehand files and rather large tables to handle. The tables are
done in PM by tabs. Excel Internet Assistant seems pretty good, but
I'd have to retype these monsters.
A major problem is that the files are not final until the very last
minute--sometimes *after* the files go to the printer--so we can't use
the original Word and Excel files. Also a lot starts out handwritten,
if you can believe that.
Everyone wants these files on the Web within a day or two of their
going to the printer. Has anyone found a good system that fits our
situation? I'd be grateful for suggestions to this list or to
mkauffne -at- ceracamb -dot- com -dot-
