TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
From Handbook of Technical Writing by Brusaw, Alred, and Oliu:
"Parenthetical material does not affect the punctuation of a sentence. If a
parenthesis closes a sentence, the ending punctuation should appear after
the parenthesis."
"A sentence that ends in a parenthesis requires a period after the
parenthesis."
"However, when a complete sentence within parentheses stands independently,
the ending punctuation goes inside the final parenthesis."
From A Writer's Reference by Hacker:
"NOTE: If a sentence ends with a period marking an abbreviation, do not add
a second period."
I could provide more references but here's a plan. Pick a reference. Read
it. Compare it with the example under discussion.
