On Information Mapping
Most experienced tech writers automatically use its principles, whether
they know it or not. I feel paying attention to its principles but
applying them as it fits the document and audience will make a better
product and improve a writer's skill. That's how we use it.
The principles include:
Chunking information
Labeling the chunks
Understanding the different kinds of information
Separating types of information (for example, don't combine
procedures and background info in one chunk)
Using tables to map out decisions
And many more things!
It's good stuff, used in moderation.
