I'm interested in knowing what people regard as the usual, typical or
indeed sensible career path for a technical writer, and especially in the
views of people who have switched into more of a marketing role.
As I see it, the opportunities for advancement from where I am now are
pretty limited unless I change the type of work I do or the type of
organisations I work for. I've been consulting for five years now mainly
with small start-ups where I have been the sole technical author on a
project, but before that I worked as a journalist on computer magazines.
The potential prospects for me seem to be:
a) more of the same. Limited opportunities for advancement.
b) move into a managerial role in a bigger company. Opportunities for
progression but would involve less writing and more bureaucracy.
c) move into marketing communications. Could you cope with it if you didn't
like the product you were promoting?
